My Story
Hi, I'm Adam,
16 years ago I had a side hustle designing newspaper ads to help launch a luxury bedding brand.
Now I'm doing what I love - But, it's not been easy:
After failing to become a Rock God.
I went into sales & marketing.
I've sold:
- Houses
- Software
- Luxury bedding
- Energy Management Systems
- Chicken Monitoring Systems (no joke)
9 times out of 10, It was up to me to take these products to market.
Most of these companies we start-ups (or really small).
The couldn't afford big marketing teams. Or, to pay an agency to develop - what would ultimately end up being - a 'fluffy' marketing message that did more harm than good.
You see, oftentimes a small or startup business will try and be everything to everyone.
They do this, because they don't want to leave money on the table, or 'miss an opportunity'.
But, the truth?
In trying to become everything to everyone → You become nothing to nobody.
And I suffered.
People just didn't get it.
They'd fail to see the value.
So, I'd fail to make target (I even got made redundant).
I'd work longer hours than everyone else, and still be behind.
I was building a patchwork career, moving from job to job.
Until, one day I got extended an olive branch.
I got invited back to a company to take a new part of their business to market.
And slowly, everything started falling into place.
We listened to the market and our customers
We wrote a compelling message
We developed a clear offer
We got it in front of people.
And I started smashing it.
In recent years, I’ve:
- Closed 134 deals in 36 months
- Won contracts totalling 7-figures
- Built multiple 6 and 7-figure pipelines
But all this time, I was fighting a personal battle.
COVID in 2020 hit me hard.
I was one of the only people NOT put on furlough.
On top of this, we had our first baby.
I was questioning who 'I' was.
So I launched a YouTube channel called 'Adam Talks', where I'd give lifestyle, productivity and tech advice.
But, when work increased, I shelved it.
But I was still keen to improve my personal brand.
So I started writing on LinkedIn.
This time, writing to a persona that would (I thought) help me sell our services.
So, I branded myself as 'Tech for Finance', launched a podcast and newsletter.
The brand did pretty well.
I became a 'finance influencer' and become a Gartner Peer Community Ambassador.
I had some amazing guests on the podcast.
But I started to burn myself out.
My mental health started to suffer.
I felt like an imposter, and I just didn't enjoy writing about that stuff.
So I canned it, and reverted back to adamshilton.com.
Despite all this, over this time I've:
- Built a following of ~30,000 people on social and e-mail
- Written and presented a TEDx talk in 90 days
- Become a Top Voice and 'AI influencer'
I've changed my brand 97 times, and scrapped more newsletters than I can count.
The 'aha' moment with all of this?
Avoid the bright shiny lights.
Listen to your internal compass.
